born July 22, 1898 in Philadelphia. At the beginning of the 1930 Calder began his experiments in the field of abstraction, first as a painter and later as a sculptor. Was heavily influenced by European abstract artists as Joan MirĂ³, Jean Arp and Piet Mondrian. Also experimented with the movement, which led him to develop two modes that made him famous sculpture, mobile and stable (Stabile). Calder's mobiles (so named by the French Dada artist Marcel Duchamp) are structures of abstract organic forms suspended in the air, swaying gently. The stable (so named by Arp) are still abstract forms that, in general, suggest ways humorous animals. While his sculptures of stone, wood and bronze, as well as his drawings and paintings (mostly gouaches) of the last time, are important, Calder's reputation is mainly due to their mobile and stable. These works, increasingly larger, enthusiastic acceptance achieved popular seldom attained by abstract art, which led to numerous commissions to be asked after the Second World War.
